Cyprus emphasizes cultural and social investment for rural village revival
Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis highlighted that reviving Cyprus’ villages requires more than just infrastructure improvements; investing in social life, culture, and opportunities for young people is essential. Speaking at Akapnou’s 36th annual community event, she stressed the government's commitment to supporting rural communities as vital to preserving Cyprus’ cultural identity and strengthening social cohesion.
Hadjimanolis emphasized that policies under the Christodoulides administration aim to improve living standards and encourage young people to stay in or return to their villages. Alongside substantial government funding, including a €91 million regeneration programme and a €43 million allocation for local projects, the focus remains on preserving traditions, community engagement, and active participation.
The event also celebrated local athletic talent, recognizing Marina Hadjicosta’s international achievements in discus throw. Hadjimanolis noted that such successes demonstrate how young people from small communities can thrive on the global stage, underscoring the importance of nurturing rural areas both culturally and socially.
