Dispute over delayed and partial compensation for farmers affected by Cyprus foot-and-mouth outbreak
The livestock breeders' union has sharply criticized the veterinary services for delays and partial payments of compensation to farmers whose animals were culled during Cyprus's recent foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Union chief Neophytos Neophytou revealed that seven farms have yet to receive full payments, despite legal compliance and cooperation during culling operations.
Veterinary services director Christodoulos Pipis defended the agency, stating that claims were evaluated individually and payout restrictions were due to discrepancies in animal registration records. He confirmed three farms had been paid and emphasized farmers' responsibility for accurate animal documentation.
More than 100 farms have received compensation overall, according to Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis, with only a small number of cases pending. The outbreak, first recorded in February 2026, led to the culling of about 80,000 animals. Replacement animals are anticipated for some farms starting September, though union leaders question the timing and conditions of this process.
