Cyprus National Guard Launches Lab to Develop Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
The Cyprus National Guard has established a new laboratory at the 12th Engineering Battalion to design, develop, and produce small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAV/FPV). This initiative, ordered by National Guard Chief Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou and operational since summer, marks the first facility of its kind for the force.
The drones developed here will initially focus on surveillance and reconnaissance missions but are planned to be enhanced for strike capabilities in the future. Theodorou recently visited the lab to review the development process and explore potential operational uses, emphasizing the importance of building domestic expertise to tailor these systems to specific battlefield needs.
This development forms part of the National Guard’s broader technological transformation aimed at boosting autonomy and adaptability. The Guard intends to equip all units with drones over the coming years and is also preparing personnel to operate these advanced unmanned systems, aligning with global military trends in drone warfare technology.
