Okypy defends transferring postoperative patients from private to public hospitals as standard procedure
The state health services organisation (Okypy) has clarified that transferring patients with postoperative complications from private to public hospitals is a routine medical practice. This statement comes after complaints from former health minister and Disy MP George Pamboridis regarding a patient who was moved from a private hospital to Nicosia general hospital due to serious complications.
Okypy confirmed that public hospitals regularly receive referrals of complex cases from private facilities, with two such transfers to Limassol general hospital happening just this week. In the specific case raised by Pamboridis, the patient initially treated privately developed complications, prompting her admission to the public hospital's emergency department. Okypy denied any refusal to provide necessary care, emphasizing that the transfer was deemed the most appropriate course of action after discussions between doctors and officials.
The organisation also highlighted concerns about the capacity of private hospitals to manage complications arising from procedures they perform. Okypy stressed that any hospital performing specialised procedures must ensure adequate staffing and resources to handle potential complications safely, underscoring the importance of patient safety across all healthcare providers.
