Larnaca intensifies mosquito control efforts to prevent disease spread
The Larnaca municipal health services have ramped up mosquito control measures, initiating additional inspections and spraying across the district to combat mosquito breeding grounds. This intensified effort targets Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, known carriers of diseases like Dengue fever and Zika, which are not endemic to Cyprus. Municipal health inspector Andreas Stergides emphasized that these species have been monitored for years through a daily house-to-house program run in collaboration with state health authorities.
Larnaca's strategy focuses on prevention, early intervention, and continuous surveillance by specialized anti-malaria teams. The municipality has also installed special traps at key entry points—including the airport, port, and marina—to monitor mosquito populations in cooperation with the Health Ministry as part of the national mosquito surveillance program. Stergides urged residents to assist by eliminating stagnant water in potential breeding sites and recommended installing window and door screens to reduce mosquito entry into homes.
