Seven Cypriot farmers still awaiting full compensation for 2026 foot-and-mouth disease losses
Seven farmers in Cyprus have yet to receive full compensation for losses incurred during the 2026 foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak, according to Neofytos Neofytou, head of the Voice of Livestock Breeders. Four farmers have received no compensation, while three have only been paid up to 15% of what they are owed. Delays have also been reported in restocking farms, with replacement animals expected to arrive starting September 1, though concerns exist regarding strict vaccination requirements imposed by Veterinary Services.
Agriculture Minister Christos Senekkis stated that over 100 affected livestock farms have received compensation, with remaining cases expected to be resolved soon. However, communication between farmers and Veterinary Services has been challenging, and clarity on compensation and farm repopulation processes remains insufficient. Neofytou emphasized that replacement animals must be unvaccinated, conflicting with most farmers’ vaccinated herds, and criticized the delayed start to restocking, which ideally should have begun 42 days after culling and disinfection.
The government awaits a scientific committee's study on restructuring the livestock sector for enhanced resilience and sustainability. Experts also highlight the need to reconsider farm proximity to address biosecurity weaknesses. Since the initial outbreak in February 2026, approximately 80,000 animals were culled, with no further cullings reported.
