Turkey issues international arrest warrant for Israeli PM Netanyahu over Gaza flotilla incident

Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is now the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by Turkey. This warrant is part of an investigation into Israel’s interception of a Gaza-bound activist flotilla. Netanyahu, along with senior Israeli officials, was already wanted under previous Turkish warrants accusing them of genocide related to the Gaza war, allegations Israel strongly denies.

Relations between Turkey and Israel have significantly deteriorated since Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023, which escalated the Gaza conflict. Turkey has hosted Hamas leaders and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has openly supported the group and criticized Israel. The two countries have also cut trade ties and suspended direct flights.

The latest warrant recalls the 2010 incident where Israeli naval commandos intercepted a Gaza-bound flotilla, resulting in the deaths of ten Turkish activists, causing a prior diplomatic rift between Ankara and Jerusalem.
