Four-year-old Marios dies after meningitis-related brain damage, investigation underway
Four-year-old Marios, who suffered brain damage due to meningitis on July 14, died on Friday at Makarios hospital. The Kourion municipality announced his death and canceled a festival event as a mark of respect, highlighting the family's close ties to the local community. Authorities confirmed the boy's death and stated that an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Marios fell ill on July 8 with a fever and was initially treated by a pediatrician. When his condition worsened, he was admitted to Limassol general hospital, where meningitis was diagnosed. Despite treatment, his health did not improve, leading to his transfer to Makarios hospital. It was during this transfer that the boy reportedly became brain dead.
Following claims by the family that meningitis was not diagnosed in time, a demonstration was held outside Limassol general hospital on August 10. Okypy, the health services organisation, expressed sympathy for the family and assured cooperation with ongoing police and internal investigations, emphasizing that all parties are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
