Minors in Cyprus Using Altered ID Photos to Illegally Rent Jet Skis
In Cyprus, minors are increasingly using mobile apps to alter their ID photos by adding facial hair or swapping images to appear older, enabling them to rent jet skis illegally. Dimitris Hadjidimitriou, president of the Cyprus Water Sports Association, explained that this practice started with foreign tourist minors and has since spread among Cypriots. Instead of presenting the actual ID document, minors show a manipulated photo on their phones to licensed operators.
The association has advised operators to remain vigilant by requesting original birth certificates or passports, especially when the renter seems underage. Some operators have encountered minors accompanied by adults who refuse to sign declarations certifying the minor’s legal age, leading to rentals being declined.
Authorities emphasize safety concerns, noting that inexperienced young jet ski users pose significant risks. New regulations limit jet ski speeds to 70 km/h and set operational restrictions near swimming areas and shorelines. Professional operators employ electronic monitoring systems to enforce speed limits and ensure safety within designated zones to prevent accidents.
