Mazotos residents intensify protests against mobile desalination unit over environmental concerns
Residents of Mazotos have escalated their protests against the planned installation of a mobile desalination unit in the Petounta area, citing concerns over environmental damage. The Initiative Group for the Rescue of Mazotos Coast, established by local residents, is actively collecting signatures and preparing for further demonstrations later this year.
Protesters warn that the project threatens the pristine coastline and the extensive Posidonia seagrass meadows, vital marine habitats located on the seabed nearby. They fear that the discharge of brine and chemical waste from the unit will severely damage these important ecosystems.
In addition to ecological worries, residents criticise the desalination unit's high energy consumption and its resulting environmental impact due to electricity generation. Despite assurances from authorities and proposed compensations, the community remains adamant, having also pursued legal action to suspend the installation work.
