Dr. Karagiannis reassures no widespread West Nile virus transmission in Cyprus currently
Dr. Petros Karagiannis, professor of microbiology, has assured the public that there is no evidence of widespread West Nile virus transmission in Cyprus at present. He emphasized that citizens should still take simple but effective preventive measures such as wearing long-sleeved clothing and using insect repellents, especially when outdoors or near stagnant water.
Dr. Karagiannis warned that people over 60 years old or those with underlying health conditions are more vulnerable to severe symptoms like encephalitis or meningitis, as the virus affects the central nervous system. He also urged hunters to protect themselves during early morning and late evening hours, the peak mosquito biting times.
The expert highlighted the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding sites by removing stagnant water from containers. Spraying should focus on salt flats drying out and river beds holding residual water after recent rains. While the virus is spread by mosquitoes acquiring it from wild birds, especially corvids, airport screenings are not deemed necessary. The Ministry of Health has protocols in place for managing reported cases.
