Following an attempted sexual assault on a young girl at a public beach in occupied Kyrenia, the self-declared mayor, Murat Sengul, announced increased security measures and patrols by the "municipal police." The suspect was immediately detained by beachgoers, handed over to the authorities, and subsequently remanded in custody after a court appearance. In response to public concern, Sengul also revealed plans to study permanent security arrangements for beaches starting next year.
Sengul emphasized that these immediate actions are not a lasting solution, advocating instead for a comprehensive overhaul of the "state authority." He stressed the necessity of monitoring people entering the occupied areas for work or tourism and addressing the issue of illegal residency. He cited that around 10,000 individuals benefited from a recent immigration amnesty, indicating a substantial number of undocumented residents.
