Cyprus urged to leverage EU regulatory framework to boost international financial centre status

Kyriacos Antonaki, Head of AML & Compliance at KENDRIS Capital Limited, has highlighted that Cyprus can enhance its position as an international financial centre by capitalizing on its European regulatory framework instead of viewing regulation merely as a cost. He emphasized that investors are increasingly prioritizing governance, transparency, resilience, and regulatory credibility over low regulatory barriers.

Antonaki pointed out that the shift in investor preferences, especially in alternative investment funds, favors jurisdictions with credible and trusted regulatory systems. Cyprus, as an EU and eurozone member, benefits from access to the European regulatory and passporting framework, offering a competitive environment with robust supervision and institutional trust.

However, Antonaki warned that success depends not only on regulatory alignment but also on quality supervision, strong governance, and proportional compliance costs. He concluded that Cyprus should promote its participation in the EU regulatory ecosystem as a strategic advantage to attract international investors seeking stability and credibility.
