Cyprus issues guidelines to reduce school bag weight and prevent health issues among students

Cyprus’s Primary Education Directorate has issued new guidelines aimed at reducing the weight of children’s school bags ahead of the new academic year. The circular emphasizes the health risks associated with heavy school bags, including lower back pain, muscle discomfort, poor posture, and increased risk of injury. Schools are instructed to implement clear policies tailored to their specific environments and regularly remind staff about these practices.

The guidelines recommend measures such as avoiding bundling multiple exercise books, scheduling lab subjects consecutively, and instructing students to bring only necessary books and stationery each day. Students are advised to carry school bags using both shoulders with properly adjusted straps and to position heavier books closer to their backs for better ergonomics. Bag wheels are encouraged where possible to ease the burden.

The initiative also stresses collaboration with parents to develop healthy habits and draws on international examples where maximum bag weight is limited to 10-15% of a child’s body weight and practical on-site storage solutions are used to minimize daily load. This comprehensive approach aims to protect students' health and promote responsibility in managing their school materials.
