Automatic Alert Issued Over Potential Mid-Air Collision Within Nicosia FIR Involving Turkish Military and Passenger Aircraft
An automatic alert was triggered by air traffic control radar indicating a possible dangerous proximity between a Turkish military transport aircraft and a passenger Boeing 737-800 within the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR). The Turkish Airbus A400M, call sign TUAF770, deviated from its flight plan and climbed to flight level 360, while the passenger jet, call sign TOM56T, descended to flight level 350. Cyprus’s Civil Aviation Department confirmed the overall flight safety situation in the FIR remains manageable despite the incident.
Sources highlighted that such events involving Turkish aircraft are a common occurrence due to a longstanding communication gap between Cyprus’s Civil Aviation Department and Turkish aviation authorities.
