Nicosia launches competition to regenerate historic Municipal Gardens with €4.1 million budget
Nicosia municipality has initiated an architectural competition aimed at regenerating the historic Municipal Gardens, with proposals due by November 10. The project focuses on restoring and upgrading the garden while preserving its historic and architectural character. The first-prize winner will be awarded the contract to complete the study and oversee the project, which has an estimated cost of €4.1 million plus VAT.
Dating back to 1901, the Municipal Gardens were originally named Victoria Garden and later redesigned in the late 1960s by architect Neoptolemos Michaelides. The garden has served as a vital public space for families, recreation, and cultural activities for over a century. Mayor Charalambos Prountzos emphasized that the regeneration will ensure the garden is safe, functional, accessible, and environmentally friendly while respecting its heritage.
The project forms part of a broader municipal strategy to enhance urban greenery, which has seen more than 22,500 trees and plants added across Nicosia in recent years. The competition follows Cyprus’ architectural competition and public procurement regulations.
