SBA Police Prepare for Ambelopoulia Bird Trapping Season with Zero-Tolerance Enforcement

The Sovereign Base Areas Police have nearly completed preparations for the upcoming Ambelopoulia bird trapping season, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy against illegal trapping. The migration period runs from August 31 to October 31, during which the Community Action Team (CAT) will deploy technology, intelligence, and partnerships to curb unlawful activities.

CAT officers have already identified and disrupted potential trapping sites throughout the Eastern SBAs. Using advanced tools such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition, drones, and surveillance equipment, the police are set to detect, prevent, and prosecute offenders responsible for snaring birds with mist nets and lethal lime sticks.

Sergeant Yiannakis Louca highlighted the ongoing collaboration with Cyprus Police, the Game Fund, and local NGOs including BirdLife and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Public cooperation is encouraged, and any information on trapping activities will be handled confidentially to strengthen wildlife protection efforts.
