Cyprus peace talks see no progress after latest Greek and Turkish Cypriot negotiator meeting
The recent two-hour meeting between Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Turkish Cypriot negotiator Mehmet Dana ended without breakthroughs on confidence-building measures or reviving formal talks. Despite a comprehensive discussion addressing points from the UN Secretary-General’s recent visit to Cyprus, no new agreements were reached on opening crossing points or advancing low politics issues.
The Greek Cypriot side proposed increasing contact frequency to pave the way for an informal 5+1 meeting and suggested leader-level talks once or twice weekly. Although the Turkish Cypriot side expressed readiness to intensify discussions, no concrete plans were established ahead of the upcoming August 26 meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.
Meanwhile, Erhürman criticized Greek Cypriot applications to the immovable property commission, accusing them of obstruction. He defended the commission’s role as an internationally recognized mechanism for property claims predating the Cyprus conflict and questioned the absence of a similar system on the Greek Cypriot side. Erhürman cautioned that politicizing legal processes could undermine trust between the communities, emphasizing his commitment to clarifying this stance to international partners.
