Cypriot diplomacy leads to Serbian EXIT withdrawing from occupied Kyrenia festival
The Serbian company EXIT has canceled its participation in a music festival planned in the occupied areas of Kyrenia, Cyprus, following coordinated diplomatic efforts by Cyprus. The Republic of Cyprus engaged in discreet and targeted diplomatic mobilisation to highlight the problematic nature of holding an event in occupied Kyrenia, emphasizing the risk of it being instrumentalised by the occupation regime.
Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos discussed the issue with his Serbian counterpart Marko Djuric, reinforcing the strong bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries. EXIT cited its withdrawal as a result of gaining a clearer understanding of the historical and political sensitivities surrounding the location, particularly the significance of Kyrenia and its castle to the Greek Cypriot community.
MEP Loucas Fourlas praised EXIT's decision as responsible and highlighted the deep friendship ties between Cyprus and Serbia. He stressed the importance of coordinated action respecting international law and cultural sensitivities. The decision reinforces the message that cultural events should unite peoples without disregarding historical memory and territorial integrity.
