Umbrella placement on protected Lara beach sparks dispute between officials
Umbrellas placed on the protected Lara beach have caused a dispute between Environment Commissioner Ilias Myrianthous and Paphos DLGO president Charalambos Pittokopitis. Myrianthous condemned the act as unacceptable, pointing out that authorities have banned placing umbrellas and installed warning signs following complaints and incidents. He stressed that existing fines are insufficient deterrents and that park ranger patrols need to be enhanced.
Pittokopitis downplayed the issue, describing it as a minor incident involving just two families and criticized what he called an exaggerated reaction from some groups. He highlighted that the incident overshadowed more significant concerns, such as neglected environmental work in the area.
During a wider meeting at the Paphos DLGO, additional topics were discussed including irrigation, waste management, and plans for a stray animal shelter in Paphos. The DLGO is ready to license the animal shelter once its location is confirmed. Furthermore, Myrianthous was asked to assist with efforts to develop a desalination plant in the Chrysochou district.
