Trial reveals abuse and neglect in 2019 suicide case of 15-year-old Stylianos Constantinou
The trial of 11 individuals, including Stylianos Constantinou's parents and social welfare employees, continues in Nicosia over the circumstances surrounding the 15-year-old's 2019 suicide. Testimonies from Stylianos's first-grade teacher describe a child subjected to repeated physical abuse by his father who reportedly “beats everyone, and my mother, and the sheep, and me.”
Evidence presented reveals Stylianos suffered from behavioural problems and neglect, including poor nutrition, hygiene issues, and visible injuries such as cigarette burns and abrasions. Despite repeated reports to social welfare services, authorities failed to adequately address the signs of violence and neglect. The teacher also recounted threats made by Stylianos’s father toward school staff after concerns about the child's welfare were raised.
An investigative report by ombudswoman Maria Stylianou Lottides highlighted “utter criminal negligence” by social workers and police who failed to protect Stylianos from psychological and physical violence at home. The boy’s tragic death ended with his siblings being removed from the family environment for their safety. The trial is set to continue as authorities seek accountability for the failures that led to this case.
