China pledges continued support for Cyprus sovereignty and Cyprus problem resolution under UN framework
China will maintain its support for Cyprus in safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing a just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem within the framework of UN resolutions, Ambassador Yang Yundong stated in his first interview since assuming office in July. Highlighting the 55 years of diplomatic relations and the five-year Strategic Partnership between the two nations, Yang noted strong mutual respect and cooperation across political, economic, cultural, and educational fields.
Ambassador Yang praised bilateral trade reaching a historic high of $1.44 billion in 2025 and underscored China's ongoing contributions to UN peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, including sending Chinese police officers. He reaffirmed China’s position, consistent since 1971, supporting a bizonal, bicommunal federation as a solution and advocated constructive contributions if negotiations resume.
Regarding China-EU relations, Yang emphasized Cyprus’s valuable role in promoting dialogue and cooperation, urging a balanced approach to economic interdependence. He also described China's global role as a defender of international order, promoting peace, development, and multilateralism amidst global challenges, while committing to deepen practical cooperation with Cyprus.
