Cypriot antiquities exhibited for first time abroad at Oxford's Ashmolean Museum
Antiquities from Cyprus will be showcased abroad for the first time in the upcoming autumn exhibition at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum, titled The Making of a Goddess, running from October 8 to April 11. The exhibition explores Aphrodite’s origins on Cyprus and her evolution through various cultures, featuring a unique copper alloy figurine dating back to 1200 BCE, the earliest known representation of the goddess.
Highlights include iconic sculptures such as the Crouching Aphrodite, a Capitoline Venus loaned from the Louvre, and Botticelli’s Venus, alongside contemporary artworks and fashion inspired by Aphrodite. The exhibition also features a recreated sanctuary showcasing how Aphrodite was worshipped across Cyprus, illustrating connections to earlier female deities like Astarte and Ishtar.
Curated by Cypriot archaeology expert Anha Ulbric, the exhibition traces the goddess’s journey from ancient Mediterranean traditions through Renaissance Europe to modern interpretations. The event aims to deepen understanding of Aphrodite’s enduring cultural significance starting from her birthplace in Cyprus.
