Cyprus House Finance Committee Approves €590,000 for New Armoured Presidential Limousine
The House finance committee in Cyprus has approved a request to allocate €590,000 for the purchase of a new armoured presidential limousine. The decision received broad support from MPs across multiple parties including Disy, Akel, Diko, and Elam, while only Alma opposed the funding.
The approval followed a closed-door committee session, amid controversy over President Nikos Christodoulides denying knowledge of the purchase, despite the cabinet approving the plan in July. The president accused a parliamentary leak of attempting to politically damage him. Some MPs defended the purchase as a necessary measure to protect the presidency, while Alma criticized the timing and questioned the president’s contradictory statements.
Elam also requested an investigation into the leak of documents related to the vehicle purchase, calling for the matter to be reported to police. Officials stressed that the allocated €590,000 represents a funding ceiling and negotiations will determine the final cost. The current presidential vehicle has been in use since 2019, with its predecessor introduced in 2010.
