Ypsonas parents threaten school boycott over unsafe prefab classrooms and delayed construction

The parents' associations of Ypsonas public schools have formally complained to the labour inspection department regarding unsafe construction works at local schools. They have threatened coordinated action along with schools in Curium, describing the situation as hazardous for the 2,682 affected children. The education ministry has been given a deadline until September 10 to respond positively to their demands, or the parents plan to report the issue to the EU and have children abstain from the first two school periods on September 14.

The coordinating committee highlighted that for three years they have raised concerns about unsuitable prefabricated and deteriorating classrooms used due to overcrowding. They also emphasized the urgent need for additional schools in the rapidly developing Ypsonas area, where the only lyceum currently operates with 12 mobile classrooms. The committee demands strategic implementation of construction projects with clear deadlines, health and safety guarantees, and full fire safety certifications until new buildings are completed.

Following their complaint, the education ministry promised a response regarding the building program and a site visit to check the prefabricated classrooms. The committee has given an extension to September 10 to receive written commitments with specific timelines for upgrading several schools and constructing new facilities in Ypsonas and western Limassol.
