Cyprus government allocates €1.5M to boost agriculture amid food security concerns
President Nikos Christodoulides announced that the Cyprus government has earmarked €1.5 million for two new agricultural projects focused on tackling the rising costs of agricultural oil and fertilizers, with a deadline set for February 2027. Speaking at a dinner hosted for the Cyprus Grain Producers Organisation, Christodoulides emphasized the importance of strengthening the primary sector as a vital component of food security for island nations like Cyprus.
The president highlighted that recent crises, including the war in Ukraine, have underscored the need for food safety and self-sufficiency. He stated that Cyprus opposes EU calls for reduced Common Agricultural Policy budgets and advocates for enhancing the primary sector, improving producers’ quality of life, and attracting younger generations to farming. Despite challenges like droughts, foot and mouth disease, and climate change impacts, production improvements in 2026 offer optimism for local farmers.
Since 2019, the government has supported agriculture with grants totaling €35 million to mitigate losses, including over €25 million related to drought impacts in 2024 and 2025. Additional funding of €4.6 million has been approved to address rising animal feed prices. The agricultural ministry plans to launch discussions in September on a new Common Agricultural Policy strategy beyond 2027 to further support and strengthen Cyprus’s primary sector.
