Criminal proceedings suspended against three defendants in Stavros Demosthenous murder trial
Prosecutors have suspended criminal proceedings against three of the six defendants in the murder trial of businessman Stavros Demosthenous, reducing the number of active defendants to four. At the Limassol Permanent Criminal Court, Senior Counsel Andreas Hadjikyrou announced the addition of a theft charge against one 30-year-old defendant, who subsequently pleaded guilty to stealing a priest’s vehicle in October 2025. The court scheduled a new hearing for September 16 to determine facts and sentencing related to the theft charge, with the trial continuing for the remaining defendants.
Demosthenous, 49, was fatally shot near his Limassol home in an incident described by police as mafia-style. The original six defendants, aged between 28 and 51, faced multiple charges including premeditated murder, conspiracy, arson, and firearm offences. The case links several defendants to the use and purchase of vehicles and weapons involved in the killing and subsequent escape. The proceedings and trial dates have been adjusted following the suspension and plea developments.
