The abandoned former Othello cinema in Engomi, located on busy 28 October Street, has become a major public safety and health hazard. Authorities have identified severe structural damage, including cracked and deteriorated concrete, posing risks to both occupants and passers-by. The site is also littered with rubbish, flammable materials, animal remains, and unsanitary waste, prompting serious health concerns.
Despite inspections and notifications to owners starting in October 2025, little progress has been made. Multiple studies and engineers have been appointed by different co-owners, but a lack of cooperation has stalled any effective repairs or remediation. The Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) has fenced off parts of the property to limit access and is moving forward with administrative fines to enforce compliance.
MP Irene Charalambides has publicly criticized the slow response, calling the building a "health bomb" and pressing both the Nicosia Municipality and government ministers for immediate action. Over a year after initial warnings, coordination among the owners and authorities remains insufficient, leaving the derelict structure a continuing threat to public safety.
