Cyprus Parliament Approves €595,000 Funding for New Armoured Presidential Limousine
The Finance Committee of Cyprus's Parliament has approved €595,000 to fund a new armoured presidential limousine, following debates and objections over the vehicle’s purchase. The decision was supported by DISY, AKEL, ELAM, DIKO, and Direct Democracy Cyprus, after briefings from Interior Ministry Director-General Elikkos Ilias and Budget Director Marios Hadjidamianou. However, MPs raised concerns over the confidential classification of the Finance Ministry’s letter related to the purchase.
Officials explained the current presidential vehicle has exceeded 200,000 kilometers and the backup car dates back to 2010, prompting the need for replacement. The new limousine will not be electric or hybrid due to required specifications and will be contracted to one of three Cyprus-based suppliers. Delivery could take six to twelve months, meaning it may not be used during President Christodoulides’s current term.
The Presidential Palace clarified that the President was unaware only of technical specifications but acknowledged the funding request. The controversy sparked further debate among MPs about transparency, cost, and necessity, with some questioning the timing of the replacement and disputing claims about document leaks.
