Paphos Mapping Accessibility Barriers to Enhance Tourism for People with Mobility Challenges
Paphos has launched a comprehensive mapping of accessibility barriers across its tourism infrastructure to improve ease of visit for individuals with mobility and other challenges. The assessment, conducted by European University Cyprus with support from the American University of Beirut, is set to conclude by mid-2027. This initiative aims to provide a detailed picture of current accessibility gaps and guide targeted improvements across beaches, cultural sites, attractions, and rural communities.
As part of its Smart Destination commitment, Paphos is integrating digital tools such as QR codes and interactive apps to aid visitors with hearing or visual impairments. The tourism board has also introduced eight specialised floating wheelchairs to enhance water access at public beaches, complementing previous investments in accessible ramps. Efforts extend beyond urban areas to nature trails and archaeological parks, promoting inclusive tourism experiences across the district.
The findings from the ongoing assessment will inform Etap's 2027–2028 action plan, prioritizing infrastructure improvements in rural areas alongside urban centres. The strategy embraces EU principles of non-discrimination and digital inclusion, underlining the district's goal to become a fully accessible, smart, and sustainable holiday destination for all visitors.
