Cyprus President Emphasizes Reunification as Only Viable Solution in First Turkish Cypriot Media Interview in Three Years
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides expressed strong conviction that the reunification of Cyprus is the only viable solution, stating there is no Plan B for Greek Cypriots. In his first interview with a Turkish Cypriot media outlet in three years, he shared optimism about working with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, emphasizing mutual willingness to find a solution.
Christodoulides highlighted the importance of negotiations based on convergences from the 2017 Crans Montana talks, proposing a method of “cross-table” negotiation focusing on paired topics such as territorial adjustments with property issues and governance with security guarantees. He noted that confidence-building measures are currently the remaining issue to be addressed, with the UN envoy already preparing a relevant list.
The President reaffirmed his opposition to a two-state solution and to normalizing the current status quo, which he warned would harm both communities. He underscored the critical role of the European Union as a guarantor of the solution’s implementation and expressed hope that progress at the upcoming UN General Assembly could renew momentum for talks involving all key parties.
