New Police Guard Assignment Procedure for Political Figures and State Officers Starts This Month
A new procedure for assigning police guards to political persons and state officers will be implemented this month, the justice ministry announced. The police will conduct risk assessments every six months or sooner to determine necessary protection measures. This new approach follows a Law Office opinion clarifying the legislative framework and guards' duties.
Historically, since the 1970s, guards were assigned based on cabinet approval without clear legislative provisions. The Law Office confirmed that risk assessments and protective measures fall within police authority, which will now communicate findings to the justice ministry without cabinet involvement.
The justice ministry stated that all current guards and protection measures are being reassessed and adjusted according to the estimated risk. If guarding is deemed unnecessary, it will be terminated or modified. Police guarding remains a security measure provided only when necessary.
