Penelope Vaskez Hadjilyra, an architect and PhD candidate at Frederick University, highlighted the issue of fenced-in, tarmacked school playgrounds in Limassol during a recent Cyprus Association of Social Anthropologists conference. She emphasized that these playgrounds, locked every afternoon and during holidays, contribute to urban heat island effects and increase neighborhood social isolation.
Hadjilyra's research proposes transforming school playgrounds into "urban cool commons"—shared spaces fostering climate adaptation, social care, and community governance. She calls the current setup a governance paradox where public spaces become effectively private, undermining civic connections they were meant to protect.
The upcoming 2029 transfer of school infrastructure management to municipalities presents a chance to rethink these spaces. Hadjilyra questions whether institutional care can be truly implemented without losing its essence, suggesting that opening school playgrounds could be a vital step toward both environmental and social repair in Mediterranean cities.
