Japanese film Kokuho to be screened in Nicosia on September 25
The Embassy of Japan in Cyprus and the Friends of Cinema Society will screen the Japanese film Kokuho at the Pantheon Theatre in Nicosia on Friday, September 25, 2026, starting at 19:30. The film, directed by Sang-il Lee, was an Official Selection at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival's Directors’ Fortnight.
Kokuho, meaning National Treasure, tells the story of Kikuo, a 15-year-old boy in 1964 Nagasaki who is taken under the wing of a famous kabuki actor following his yakuza father's death. The film spans decades, chronicling Kikuo's dedication to kabuki theatre alongside the actor’s son, evolving into one of Japan's greatest masters of the art. The screening will be in Japanese with English subtitles and runs for 175 minutes.
Admission is free but limited to those aged 18 and over, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis and no reservations required. The Embassy of Japan, established in Cyprus in 2018, aims to promote Japanese culture through various events and educational initiatives.
