Cyprus Education Ministry Commits to Quality and Innovation as New School Year Begins
The new school year in Cyprus begins on Monday with a strong focus on a human-centered approach to education, according to Education Minister Athena Michaelidou. The ministry is committed to continuing reforms, introducing innovations, and addressing long-standing issues to create a safe, orderly, and high-quality learning environment. New subjects have been introduced, and infrastructure has been upgraded alongside enhanced use of technology to support students' active participation and critical thinking.
Approximately 41,280 students will return to gymnasiums, lyceums, and technical schools, supported by around 7,200 teachers across various secondary institutions. In addition, 890 teachers will serve secondary technical education, while primary schoolteachers will also resume work Monday, with 52,186 children set to attend primary schools, including 9,000 first-year pupils. Kindergartens will welcome about 14,400 children this academic year.
The ministry aims to foster modern, inclusive schools that encourage curiosity and experiential learning, ensuring education evolves to meet the goals and needs of a new generation.
