Fourteenth body recovered from Kyrenia ferry disaster as search continues for missing
A fourteenth body has been recovered from the wreckage of the ferry that capsized off Kyrenia, according to Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Unal Ustel. The body, identified as a male aged between 55 and 60, brings the confirmed death toll to 14, while 14 people remain missing. Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, with teams working around the clock despite increasingly difficult conditions underwater and inside the sunken vessel.
Prime Minister Ustel detailed plans to enhance recovery efforts by involving private experts specialized in deep-sea wreck searches and ship salvage. He will meet officials in Istanbul and Ankara to discuss these reports and coordinate further steps, including consultations with the ferry’s insurance company. Ustel emphasized his commitment to utilizing all available resources and technology to recover the missing individuals.
The ferry, carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members, sank shortly after departing Kyrenia for the Turkish port of Tasucu on August 30. All eight crew members remain in custody following their arrest, with investigations revealing issues with the captain’s credentials and the decision to sail despite port closures due to storms. One person remains hospitalized due to the accident.
