Mazotos residents oppose desalination plant approved despite cancellations elsewhere
Residents of Mazotos in the Larnaca district are expressing strong opposition to a government-approved mobile desalination plant, while similar projects planned for Ayia Napa and Germasogeia have been cancelled. The Mazotos Coastline Rescue Initiative Group canceled a planned protest due to bad weather but is preparing new actions following discussions with Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis.
Local spokesperson Eleni Chaili criticized the government for proceeding with the Mazotos plant despite objections, arguing residents feel disregarded and view the plant as effectively permanent, despite its mobile label. Environmental concerns cited include potential damage to the Petountas area's coastline and existing sewage pollution issues nearby.
The community council has filed two court cases aiming to halt the plant's construction, and has demanded compensatory measures if the project proceeds. The desalination unit, costing over 92 million euros, would have a daily capacity of 40,000 cubic meters, further intensifying local resistance.
