Cyprus approves eco-conscious organised beach at Argaka to protect turtle habitats
Cyprus's Central Beaches Committee has approved the establishment of an organised bathing beach in Argaka, aiming to accommodate local residents and tourists while safeguarding the environment. The decision, detailed in the Official Gazette, includes stringent conditions to preserve the area's sensitive ecosystem, particularly the loggerhead and green turtle nesting grounds in the Natura 2000 Polis-Gialia Special Area of Conservation.
This marks the second attempt to create a regulated beach in Argaka after a previous initiative was halted due to non-compliance with environmental protections. The new plan mandates measures such as daytime-only beach access during nesting season, protective cages over turtle nests, and strict bans on night lighting, mechanical cleaning, dune interventions, and motorised water sports.
Authorities will maintain 78 removable sunbeds and 39 fixed umbrellas to minimize sand disturbance. Vehicle access will be blocked by natural barriers to prevent ecosystem damage. Stakeholders have 30 days to file legal appeals with the Interior Minister following publication of these regulations.
