President Christodoulides hopeful for convergence document ahead of UN envoy's visit to Cyprus
President Nikos Christodoulides expressed optimism on Saturday that a document outlining existing convergences on the Cyprus problem will be ready before UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin’s next visit. He believes this document could serve as the foundation for an expanded conference and the resumption of negotiations. The document will need to be presented to both sides involved and the guarantor powers. Christodoulides emphasized that once agreement on convergences is reached, negotiations can restart focusing on remaining divergences.
Christodoulides also highlighted positive developments, including an upcoming meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman and the confirmed date for his bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during the UN General Assembly in New York. Both sides appear ready to advance discussions, with confidence-building measures already under consideration.
Additionally, Christodoulides discussed the upcoming Cyprus-Greece-Egypt trilateral summit in El Alamein, which will focus on regional security and cooperation. He noted Cyprus's excellent relations with Egypt and added that all regional developments, including the Mecca agreement, will be addressed during the meeting. The president also mentioned his plans to attend the second EU-Gulf summit in Saudi Arabia this October.
