UN Envoy Maria Angela Holguin Cancels Cyprus Visit Due to Health Reasons
UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, has cancelled her scheduled visit to Cyprus on September 10 due to health-related travel restrictions, reports revealed on Saturday. Originally planned to attend a key meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on September 9, Holguin's visit was first postponed because of illness and later cancelled following medical advice against air travel.
Holguin is now expected to hold discussions with both leaders during the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York. President Christodoulides expressed hope that a document outlining existing agreements related to the Cyprus problem would be ready before Holguin's next visit. This document could pave the way for an expanded conference and the resumption of official negotiations.
Christodoulides emphasized the importance of preserving the negotiating framework and addressing areas of divergence to move talks forward. He remains optimistic about progress, mentioning an upcoming meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman in the near future.
