One person remains hospitalized and 15 missing after Kyrenia ferry sinking
Six days after a passenger ferry sank off the coast of Kyrenia, only one of the 132 people initially hospitalized remains in hospital, with their condition steadily improving, Turkish Cypriot 'prime minister' Unal Ustel reported. A total of 131 victims have been discharged, and no patients remain in intensive care.
The death toll from the accident stands at 13, while 15 individuals are still missing. Search-and-rescue operations continue around the clock as authorities work to locate the missing passengers. In the immediate aftermath, healthcare workers mobilized swiftly, with 21 ambulances, 63 personnel, and numerous doctors and nurses providing urgent aid both at the scene and in various hospitals.
Families of the missing have provided DNA samples to assist in the identification of recovered remains. Ustel emphasized that identification efforts will incorporate DNA analysis alongside other methods to ensure accurate and definitive results, aiming to provide clarity and closure to affected families.
