Cyprus President urges economic gains to directly benefit citizens amid €3.5bn EU funding plans
President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that Cyprus's economic growth must result in tangible improvements for ordinary people, including higher incomes and enhanced public services such as health, education, housing, and welfare. Speaking after the country’s recent credit rating upgrade by an international agency, the President described the upgrade as evidence of responsible governance but stressed that real success means economic benefits reaching families and the middle class.
Linking Cyprus’s strong fiscal position to its ability to implement policies such as tax and pension reforms, Christodoulides highlighted these as measures that will directly improve citizens’ incomes, particularly benefiting pensioners. He argued that growth should trickle down into every household.
Looking ahead, the President revealed plans for Cyprus to access over €3.5 billion in funding from the EU and national contributions between 2028 and 2034, starting with €2.5 billion from the Cohesion Fund. He urged communities to prepare projects promptly to utilize this funding, which aims to transform towns and improve daily life for residents across the island.
