Cyprus reports fiscal surplus and stable tourism revenue amid inflation and economic shifts

Cyprus recorded a general government fiscal surplus of €770.6 million in the first seven months of 2026, equivalent to 2% of GDP. This surplus was slightly higher than the €759.6 million registered in the same period last year, despite a marginal drop in GDP share. Total government revenue increased by 4.1%, driven primarily by a 7.7% rise in income and wealth tax collections.

Tourism revenue in Cyprus edged up by 0.2% in June 2026 to €423.1 million, even as tourist arrivals fell by 1.7% compared to June 2025. However, for the first half of the year, total tourism revenue declined by 11.4%, showing ongoing challenges. Inflation in Cyprus remains elevated, primarily due to imported energy costs, with consumer price increases reaching 3.5% in August. Experts note this inflation is not demand-driven but linked to global energy price pressures.

The economic environment also reflects a cautious lending landscape with stable credit standards and increased household demand for loans. Cyprus continues to adjust its strategies to maintain competitiveness, including embracing digital tools for fiscal management and exploring growth in emerging sectors like artificial intelligence and electric vehicle imports.
