EU Commission confirms no CAP payments to livestock farmers in Cyprus’s occupied north amid foot-and-mouth outbreak
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has confirmed that no Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) funds have been paid to livestock farmers in the occupied northern part of Cyprus. In a written response to Cypriot MEP Michalis Hadjipantelas, she emphasized that CAP payments are managed exclusively by the Republic of Cyprus and its Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.
Von der Leyen acknowledged the ongoing foot-and-mouth disease outbreak on the island and highlighted the need for applying EU animal health legislation uniformly across all areas of Cyprus to control the disease. She also underscored the importance of cooperation between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot authorities in managing the outbreak through established bicommunal technical committees.
MEP Hadjipantelas raised concerns about the potential risks posed to the Single Market by the inability to enforce EU regulations on animal health and welfare in the occupied north. He urged the European Commission to ensure that any future funding to farmers would only be authorized if full compliance with EU standards is observed, emphasizing the protection of consumers and public health as paramount.
