Cyprus Rejects 5 MW Solar Park near Ecologically Sensitive Aradippou Area
Cyprus’s Environment Department has rejected a proposal to build and operate a 5 MW solar park in the Municipality of Aradippou due to significant environmental concerns. A Special Ecological Assessment report supported the decision, highlighting that the project would cause major, irreversible harm to the Koshi–Pallourokampos Special Protection Area.
The assessment found that the solar park would disturb and fragment habitats critical to numerous bird species, including the protected long-legged buzzard and Bonelli’s eagle. Construction and operation would lead to habitat loss, disturbance, and displacement, with increased risks from road and power network expansions, potentially causing nest abandonment and collision hazards.
Officials emphasized that the primary reason for rejection is the site's proximity to this ecologically sensitive zone, which hosts 55 bird species, nine under strict EU protection. The decision aims to prevent further ecological degradation and safeguard the area's conservation priorities.
