Some Teaching Graduates Wait Over Four Decades on Cyprus Public School Appointment List
The Educational Service Commission (EEY) revealed that some teaching graduates in Cyprus have been waiting up to 43 years for a public school appointment, with degrees submitted as early as 1983. This was highlighted amid ongoing debates about the inefficiencies in the teacher appointment system. Over the past three years, 310 candidates have been removed from the appointment list due to reaching retirement age limits of 65 for secondary and 62 for primary education.
EEY president Panayiotis Antoniou explained that vacancies remain because some candidates decline appointments, often having found alternative employment during their extended wait. As of the latest update, 40 teachers declined postings for the upcoming school year. Antoniou also noted significant shortages in pre-primary education leadership, where kindergartens are mostly run by officers-in-charge rather than appointed principals.
Looking ahead, Antoniou expressed support for reforms including the introduction of competitive examinations and preparatory programs before classroom entry to improve the appointment process and ensure better staffing across Cyprus schools.
