Greece-Israel Military Deal Enhances Security for Cyprus Against Common Threat from Turkey
The recent military agreement between Greece and Israel, known as the Achilles Shield, provides defence benefits not only to the two nations but also extends protection to Cyprus, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas stated. Signed under a €3 billion deal, the agreement aims to develop a multi-layered air defence system for Greece, which also strengthens trilateral cooperation among Greece, Israel, and Cyprus against common security threats.
Palmas emphasized that all three countries face challenges related to Turkey, including occupation issues in Cyprus, airspace violations against Greece, and diplomatic tensions involving Israel. The defence collaboration is intended to bolster security, territorial integrity, and sovereignty across the region through coordinated political and military cooperation.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised the agreement as a significant milestone, highlighting its connection to longstanding strategic relations with Cyprus. Cyprus currently operates Israel’s Barak MX missile defence system and plans to acquire Greek-made Kentavros counter-drone systems, further enhancing its defensive capabilities.
