Second body recovered from Kyrenia shipwreck identified as 58-year-old Elmas Demir, mother of five
The second body retrieved from the capsized catamaran off the coast of Kyrenia has been identified as 58-year-old Elmas Demir. She was among the victims of the maritime tragedy that occurred on August 30, resulting in at least ten confirmed deaths and 18 missing persons. Demir, originally from Mersin and living in Eskisehir, worked in a hotel in the occupied areas and had purchased the ill-fated ticket to visit her family in Turkey.
Search and rescue operations have been ongoing for six days, with two Turkish ships assisting in the effort to locate the missing individuals and the ship's black box, which is expected to provide insights into the disaster. Sadly, hopes for finding survivors are diminishing.
Investigations have revealed that the captain ignored warnings about the ship’s condition before departure. Nine individuals, including the captain, were arrested and brought before court. Authorities have taken blood and urine samples from the detainees to check for alcohol or drug use, while an inspection authority is verifying the vessel’s certification and documentation.
