Cyprus Cultural Organisations Advocate for Fair Pay and Sector Reform
Cultural organisations in Cyprus have released a comprehensive report calling for fair-pay reform and improved working conditions across the cultural sector. The report, "Recommendations Towards Fair Working Conditions in the Cultural Sector," was published in July by D6 Culture EU as part of the Larnaka2030 project, with support from the Deputy Ministry of Culture, Larnaca Municipality, and the European Union. It aims to foster dialogue with authorities and influence European cultural policy discussions.
The report highlights challenges including inadequate state funding—currently about 0.5% of the state budget—and the need for a balanced funding model that better supports artists’ remuneration. It also revisits the rejected 2025 Artists’ Registry Bill, emphasizing that future legislative measures should be developed collaboratively with the cultural community, addressing issues such as income insecurity, social insurance, and labour rights.
Drawing on international examples from Ireland, Spain, and Belgium, the recommendations propose specific legal reforms in Cyprus, including classifying artists as a distinct professional category. The report stresses that meaningful change requires ongoing dialogue and a collective commitment to reform beyond isolated legislative efforts.
