Air Conditioning Installation Progress Varies Across Cyprus Schools Ahead of New Term
The Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth confirmed that air conditioners will be installed in schools across the island despite encountering technical and safety challenges during the project. Education Minister Athena Michaelidou emphasized the importance of ensuring correct and safe installation, highlighting the discovery of significant electrical and safety issues in some institutions.
Progress on the installation varies widely by district and school level. Famagusta leads in primary schools with 65% fully operational units, while Paphos trails at just 16%. Among gymnasiums, Larnaca shows 45% full operation, whereas Nicosia has the lowest rate at 18%. Lyceums have made the greatest strides, with Larnaca achieving 100% full operation and Limassol 90%.
Minister Michaelidou stated that installation is contingent on meeting strict fire safety and electrical standards. In some cases, electrical substations are required before air conditioning units can be safely installed. The Ministry is coordinating with the Fire Service and School Boards to ensure compliance with regulations before schools commence the new academic year.
